Aptamil Stage 2 vs Stage 1: What Changes and When to Switch
Many Bangladesh parents wonder: what exactly is different between Aptamil Stage 1 and Stage 2, and when should they make the switch? This clear guide answers those questions.
The Core Difference: Iron and Nutrient Levels
Aptamil Stage 2 (Follow-On Milk) contains significantly more iron and adjusted levels of other nutrients compared to Stage 1:
| Nutrient (per 100ml) | Aptamil Stage 1 | Aptamil Stage 2 |
|---|
| Iron | 0.53mg | 1.2mg |
| Calcium | 55mg | 80mg |
| Vitamin D | 1.2mcg | 1.5mcg |
| Energy | 67 kcal | 64 kcal |
| GOS/FOS Prebiotics | 0.8g | 0.8g |
| DHA | 10.4mg | 10.4mg |
Why Higher Iron in Stage 2?
Babies are born with iron stores that last approximately 6 months. From 6 months, they need iron from their diet. Stage 2's doubled iron content supports:
- Cognitive development — iron is essential for brain function
- Energy production
- Prevention of iron deficiency anaemia — common in Bangladeshi infants
When Exactly Should You Switch?
- Switch at 6 months — not before
- Switch when you introduce solid foods (both happen at 6 months)
- Stage 2 is appropriate up to 12 months
- At 12 months, switch to Stage 3 or growing-up milk
Can You Stay on Stage 1 After 6 Months?
Yes, Stage 1 is nutritionally complete and can be used throughout the first year if preferred. However, switching to Stage 2 at 6 months provides higher iron content that better matches your baby's growing needs. UK NHS guidance says Stage 2 is not essential but is appropriate from 6 months.
