How to Buy Original Baby Formula Milk in Bangladesh: Complete Safety Guide
Bangladesh's baby formula market has a serious problem: counterfeit, expired, and illegally repackaged formula milk. For parents, giving a fake formula to a baby can have severe health consequences. This safety guide teaches you how to identify genuine baby formula and where to buy safely.
The Problem: Fake Formula Milk in Bangladesh
Investigations by consumer protection agencies have found that in some Bangladesh markets:
- Formula tins with expired dates are relabelled with new dates
- Cheap generic powder is put into branded packaging
- Used tins are refilled and resealed
- Formula is stored in improper conditions (heat, humidity) degrading nutritional value
Street market kiosks, unverified online sellers, and some local grocery shops carry the highest risk.
How to Identify Genuine Baby Formula
1. Check the Lot Number and Expiry Date
Genuine formula has a clearly printed (not stickered-over) lot number on the base of the tin. The expiry date should be at least 6 months from purchase. If the date appears printed over a sticker or is unusually close, refuse the product.
2. Check the Seal
The foil seal inside the tin should be completely intact, shiny, and unbroken. Any puncture, discolouration, or wrinkles indicate tampering.
3. Smell and Appearance of Powder
Genuine formula powder should:
- Be uniform pale cream or white — no clumping
- Smell mildly of dairy — no rancid, musty, or chemical smell
- Dissolve smoothly in water — no gritty residue
4. Buy From Authorised Sources
Only buy from sellers who can confirm direct import from the manufacturer or an authorised distributor. ShampoBD is an authorised importer of all major brands including:
Red Flags to Avoid
- Price significantly below market rate (more than 20% cheaper)
- Seller cannot provide import documents or lot verification
- Tin has visible dents, rust, or damaged edges
- Label appears reprinted, different font, or in wrong language
- Seller pressure-sells or discourages inspection
What to Do If You Suspect Fake Formula
- Stop using immediately
- Do not feed the baby any more from the suspected tin
- Consult your paediatrician if baby shows any unusual symptoms
- Report to Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) or consumer protection authority
- Leave a review warning other parents
