A Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN) is a special mosquito net treated with insecticide that kills or repels mosquitoes on contact. The treatment lasts for the life of the net (3-5 years) even through washing. WHO recommends LLINs as one of the most effective malaria and dengue prevention tools.
The insecticide (usually permethrin or deltamethrin) in the net kills mosquitoes that land on it. This protects not just the person sleeping under the net but also others in the room by reducing the overall mosquito population.
| Feature | Regular Net | LLIN |
| Mosquito killing | No | Yes |
| Protection if torn | Reduced | Still active around hole |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Suitable for children | Yes | Yes (WHO approved) |
WHO-approved LLINs are safe for babies and children when used as directed. The insecticide amount is minimal and does not pose health risks to sleeping children.
A quality LLIN lasts 3-5 years with proper care. It can be washed up to 20 times without losing effectiveness.
